his year’s IEEE photonics society Taipei Chapter annual meeting was held on December 5th , 2020 in National Taipei University of Technology along with OPTIC conference. There are about 30 to 40 participants from the chapter and a few student members. The meeting began with the chairperson’s annual report of the chapter by Prof. Chien-chung Lin. The global pandemic situation has seriously hindered the activities in academia and industries at the same time. Many conferences were delayed or cancelled. Some of them changed to virtual format. Although Taiwan has a very strong defense against this spread, our activities in the first half of the year 2020 were dwindled. Most of the meetings and workshops came back in the second half of the year. Such as the Optical Design Workshop, a training seminar for students to catch up the beauty of the optical design, was held in NCTU last September. The 25th OECC conference, which is indexed by IEEExplore, was held in Taipei last October. This conference is the major event after this pandemic started earlier this year. The staff in the conference took extra efforts to integrate on-line live streaming, video, and face-to-face formats together in one platform. Both photonic professionals and students were impressed and we had very good discussion in this gathering. The annual report was finished with financial account condition, and many thanks to the support from the Photonics Society, we are doing very well financially.
Many questions were raised during the meeting, including the possible extension of the membership from Southern Taiwan chapter, and some errors from the reports need to be corrected, etc.. We shall keep working on these issues to improve our service to our members and promote the photonic awareness in Taiwan. This year’s meeting also marks the end of this term. We had an officer election for the next term, and Prof. Tien-Chang Lu of National Chiao Tung University was elected as the chairperson of the Taipei chapter, Prof. Yuh-Renn Wu of National Taiwan University as the vice-chairperson, and Prof. Chao-Hsin Wu of National Taiwan University as the Treasurer. We would like to thank them for their service to the community in the years to come.
